What is PreciseFlex DDR 4-Axis?
The Brooks Automation PreciseFlex DDR 4-Axis direct-drive collaborative robot combines the benefits of traditional robots with the ease-of-use of collaborative robots. It features direct-drive motors in the base and elbow and a gear belt drive for the Z axis, enabling by-hand teaching and reducing the risk of large collision forces commonly found in harmonic-drive robots.
This design allows the robot to move at speeds comparable to human movement, even in the presence of operators, while adhering to ISO collaborative robot safety standards. The cylindrical working volume of the PreciseFlex DDR takes up less space compared to vertically-articulated robots and minimizes collision forces through its inner link moving under the outer link and its ability to tuck in its arm for higher tool speed with lower kinetic energy. Soft foam covers provide protection during collisions.
What applications is PreciseFlex DDR 4-Axis product best for?
Brooks Automation PreciseFlex DDR 4-Axis robots are best for applications that require a direct-drive, collaborative robot with a small footprint and safe operation in the presence of people. These robots are ideal for mobile applications, as the controls and power supplies are located inside the robot, and the cylindrical working volume minimizes the overhanging moment, making it easier to mount on a mobile platform. The direct-drive motors and gear belt drive allow for by-hand teaching and reduced collision forces, making it safe for people to work around the robot while it is in motion.

How does Brooks Automation PreciseFlex DDR 4-Axis function?
Brooks Automation PreciseFlex DDR 4-Axis functions by using direct-drive motors in the base and elbow, and a gear belt drive for the Z axis. This patented design approach allows for human-like movement speeds and eliminates large collision forces that are commonly present in harmonic drive robots. The cylindrical working volume and internal controls and power supplies of PreciseFlex DDR make it ideal for mobile applications and offer a smaller footprint in the factory. Soft foam covers cushion collisions and protect operators, while the design of the arm minimizes collision forces and allows for higher tool speeds with lower kinetic energy.
