Man-Robot collaboration at Migros Group Stäubli

Problem

It was an ideal case of human-machine collaboration: we needed a solution that could handle sheet metal for autoclave loading and unloading operations. We wanted to make the job safer. The goal was to take some of the grunt work out of this purely manual job. You have to remember that these aluminum sheets weigh 5kg.

Solution

A trainee who never programmed an industrial robot, spent four days in training at Stäubli to get familiar with the programming environment. “We took the time to clearly define the application and the objectives we needed to meet. It allowed us to take full advantage of the robot’s unique safety features: The robot can work fast, but then it can slow down and continue to work safely as soon as someone enters the work area.”

Outcome

Through the Packfix project, we were able to demonstrate the value of collaborative robotics. We now have a robot that our employees use as part of the production process. And what they’re seeing is: “Hey, this robot helps me get my job done, and that really adds value.” It’s improved our workplace safety, and that’s critical. There’s a lot of potential for the future.
