IRB 8700 Overview

What is IRB 8700?

The ABB IRB 8700 is an advanced industrial robot, notable for its high payload capacity and performance. Capable of handling up to 1000 kg with the wrist down, it outpaces its competitors by 25% in speed. Its design emphasizes high production capacity, reliability, and ease of maintenance, making it a versatile choice for demanding applications. With simplified configurations and ABB's Foundry Plus 2 protection standard, the IRB 8700 ensures high uptime and low total cost of ownership.

The IRB 8700 is built with a single motor and gear per axis, unlike others in its class that use dual motors and gears. This streamlined design includes a reliable counterweight and mechanical springs instead of gas springs, reducing potential failure points and enhancing safety. The robot is equipped with LeanID, which offers a cost-effective solution for dress packs, extending their life and facilitating easy simulation and programming. Its compact footprint and robust counterweight system allow it to navigate tight spaces efficiently.

Designed for sustainability, the IRB 8700 complies with environmental directives, ensuring the use of non-hazardous materials. Its performance is exceptional, with superior motion control that adapts to heavy and wide parts, maintaining high speed and accuracy. These features make the IRB 8700 suitable for various applications, from heavy material handling to intricate manufacturing processes, providing flexibility and reliability in industrial environments.

What applications is IRB 8700 product best for?

  1. Automotive Industry: The IRB 8700 excels in automotive manufacturing, handling tasks such as spot welding, heavy part assembly, and body-in-white applications. Its high payload capacity and speed enhance production efficiency and precision in car assembly lines.
  2. Metal Fabrication: The IRB 8700 is ideal for metal fabrication processes, including heavy-duty welding, cutting, and material handling. Its robust design and superior motion control ensure accurate and consistent performance in demanding metalworking environments.
  3. Heavy Equipment Manufacturing: The IRB 8700 supports the production of heavy machinery and equipment, managing tasks such as large part handling, assembly, and machining. Its high payload capacity and reliable operation make it suitable for assembling and manipulating substantial components in heavy equipment industries.

Title
Picking and loading/placing medium sized (440kgs) diesel engines (after powder coating process) into rigid stands within shipping crates.
Pro
Outstanding performance even in harsh conditions (powder-coating dusty environments and high temperatures) and also possesses good momentum braking attitude with absolute-zero swaying. Easy to program with the IRC5 "robust" controller.
Con
It would be nice to find flexible dust covers (socks) for protection and maintaining all moving parts and joints, clean. The counterweight springs start to make noise after a while, but we cannot be sure if they were replaced at some point (not mentioned in the service log) since we purchased used and not refurbished units. For sure, ABB is not to blame. We have never had any issues with their robots, before.
