RealSense™ Depth Camera D405 Overview

What is RealSense™ Depth Camera D405?

The Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D405 is a short-range stereo camera offering sub-millimeter accuracy, making it ideal for close-range computer vision applications. Its standout feature includes the use of an image signal processor (ISP) to enhance RGB data from the depth sensor, ensuring matched RGB and depth data for improved imaging capabilities.

Operating within a range of 7 cm to 50 cm, the D405 provides sub-millimeter accuracy with a minimum object detection of 0.1 mm at 7 cm. Despite its high precision, the camera maintains a small and lightweight design, measuring only 42 mm × 42 mm × 23 mm and weighing 60 g, making it compact and portable.

The D405 is well-suited for a variety of industrial automation applications. In manufacturing facilities, it enables defect detection with remarkable accuracy of 0.1 mm, facilitating automated inspections and precise pick-and-place operations for small objects at close range. Additionally, the camera finds application in robotics with gripping capabilities, assembly line inspections, and even wound management in healthcare settings, providing accurate 3D measurements without the need for physical contact. Its sub-millimeter accuracy opens up a new world of use cases requiring precise close-range depth sensing.

Testimonial
I've been using the Real Sense Depth Camera in my project, especially to see the object during its learning phase, it's hooked up to my computer running ROS, Which makes integration super easy, I set it up on a tripod pointing down at the table where i work.

Title
This camera has been used as a vision system for a robot manipulator. It was essential to achieve object detection for the teaching phase of a Teaching by Demonstration learning system. The robot was controlled using ROS and thanks to the ROS wrapper of the Intel RealSense camera it was quickly integrated into the project. The camera was placed on a tripod facing the working surface
Pro
It has a ROS wrapper. It is a stereo camera that allows the creation of Point Cloud Data and the location of the points in the 3D space. It is easy to use and to integrate.
Con
When placed on a tripod it was unstable and it needed constant recalibration. It has to be connected with a USB type C wire, the one provided is relatively small.
