RealSense™ Depth Camera D455 Overview

What is RealSense™ Depth Camera D455?

The Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D455 is the latest addition to the D400 series, offering twice the range and improved performance. With a distance of 95 mm between depth sensors, the D455 achieves depth error of less than 2% at 4 meters. The integration of an IMU allows for enhanced environmental awareness in robotic and drone applications, refining depth awareness during camera movement.

The D455 provides more accuracy and flexibility for various use cases. Its longer range makes it ideal for collision avoidance in fast-moving autonomous robots, ensuring safer operation in dynamic environments. The tightly integrated RGB and depth streams with a global shutter on the RGB sensor improve the correlation between color and depth information, resulting in better quality scanning. For touch-free displays in public spaces, the longer range of the D455 enables reliable gesture control and interaction from a greater distance. Additionally, multiple D455 cameras can be easily set up together for volumetric content creation, offering real-time scene capture at up to 90 frames per second, both indoors and outdoors.

Testimonial
I've been using the Real Sense Depth Camera in my project, especially to see the object during its learning phase, it's hooked up to my computer running ROS, Which makes integration super easy, I set it up on a tripod pointing down at the table where i work.

Title
This camera has been used as a vision system for a robot manipulator. It was essential to achieve object detection for the teaching phase of a Teaching by Demonstration learning system. The robot was controlled using ROS and thanks to the ROS wrapper of the Intel RealSense camera it was quickly integrated into the project. The camera was placed on a tripod facing the working surface
Pro
It has a ROS wrapper. It is a stereo camera that allows the creation of Point Cloud Data and the location of the points in the 3D space. It is easy to use and to integrate.
Con
When placed on a tripod it was unstable and it needed constant recalibration. It has to be connected with a USB type C wire, the one provided is relatively small.
