RealSense™ Depth Camera D435i Overview

What is RealSense™ Depth Camera D435i?

The Intel® RealSense™ depth camera D435i combines robust depth sensing with an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The addition of an IMU allows the camera to refine its depth awareness during movement, enabling rudimentary SLAM and tracking applications for better point-cloud alignment. It also enhances environmental awareness for robotics, drones, and handheld scanning systems. The IMU data is time-stamped to align with the high-quality depth data, making it valuable for applications like virtual/augmented reality and drones.

The D435i integrates an IMU into a small form factor with an Intel module and vision processor, making it a complete and powerful package for development and productization. Its wide field of view and global shutter sensor make it ideal for robotic navigation and object recognition applications. The camera's wider field of view reduces blind spots, and the global shutter sensors offer excellent low-light sensitivity for navigation in dark environments.

As part of the Intel® RealSense™ D400 series, the D435i offers simple integration and is perfect for developers, makers, and innovators looking to incorporate depth sensing into their intelligent vision-equipped solutions. It brings forth a new generation of devices with advanced depth sensing capabilities, driving innovation across various industries.

Testimonial
I've been using the Real Sense Depth Camera in my project, especially to see the object during its learning phase, it's hooked up to my computer running ROS, Which makes integration super easy, I set it up on a tripod pointing down at the table where i work.

Title
This camera has been used as a vision system for a robot manipulator. It was essential to achieve object detection for the teaching phase of a Teaching by Demonstration learning system. The robot was controlled using ROS and thanks to the ROS wrapper of the Intel RealSense camera it was quickly integrated into the project. The camera was placed on a tripod facing the working surface
Pro
It has a ROS wrapper. It is a stereo camera that allows the creation of Point Cloud Data and the location of the points in the 3D space. It is easy to use and to integrate.
Con
When placed on a tripod it was unstable and it needed constant recalibration. It has to be connected with a USB type C wire, the one provided is relatively small.
