RealSense™ Depth Camera D435f Overview

What is RealSense™ Depth Camera D435f?

The Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D435f is designed to meet the demands of the growing market for autonomous mobile robots. Its standout feature is the utilization of an IR pass filter, which enhances depth noise quality and extends performance range in various robotic environments. The camera's improved depth quality in scenes with repetitive patterns and mitigation of visible reflections make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.

With the incorporation of a 750nm near-infrared filter during Intel's production process, the D435f offers easy out-of-the-box integration. It effectively resolves false depth perception caused by repetitive vertical patterns, such as poles in airports, vertical blinds, ceiling pipes, floor drains, and small floor tiles.

The D435f is a valuable addition to the D400 family, widely utilized in a diverse range of robotic use cases. Its enhanced depth quality and capabilities make it an excellent choice for robotics applications in real-world scenarios, contributing to improved performance and efficiency in autonomous mobile robot systems.

Testimonial
I've been using the Real Sense Depth Camera in my project, especially to see the object during its learning phase, it's hooked up to my computer running ROS, Which makes integration super easy, I set it up on a tripod pointing down at the table where i work.

Title
This camera has been used as a vision system for a robot manipulator. It was essential to achieve object detection for the teaching phase of a Teaching by Demonstration learning system. The robot was controlled using ROS and thanks to the ROS wrapper of the Intel RealSense camera it was quickly integrated into the project. The camera was placed on a tripod facing the working surface
Pro
It has a ROS wrapper. It is a stereo camera that allows the creation of Point Cloud Data and the location of the points in the 3D space. It is easy to use and to integrate.
Con
When placed on a tripod it was unstable and it needed constant recalibration. It has to be connected with a USB type C wire, the one provided is relatively small.
