We use this robot in an experiment with end-users trying a block-based language for mobile robots. UR5 was mounted on top of a MiR 250 mobile robot, and it was used by the participants to solve a pick-and-place task using our block-based language. In general, I must say that this is a very solid robot. Universal Robots, in my personal opinion, is one of (if not the) best companies in terms of software development support. Using their API we were able to implement the language as we wanted. The robot itself is also very easy to manipulate using lead-through mode; the participants in our experiment had no issues manipulating it. In terms of operating system and configuration, Universal Robots is also really good, no issues at all.

Title
I used it for academic purposes, to test different types of non-linear controls and their performances. The first approach was carried out in Matlab simulation with Peter Cork's robotics toolbox, which I recommend for its simplicity. The porting of the various control techniques from the simulation to the real robot has been made simple thanks to the user manual. On the internet it is also possible to find a lot of support regarding the more classic problems
Pro
The arm is powerful (as per the datasheet) and very accurate. The structure, in addition to being pleasant, is robust. The ability to test trajectories a priori in a simulated environment has made testing on the real robot much safer. The robot comes with polyscope, a very simple GUI for programming the robot. From this interface it is possible to connect the robot with the modbus, and therefore with any other microcontroller you want.
Con
Polyscope is very simple to use, but it is built with JAVA FX, and the result is a slightly retro GUI. For the cost of the robot, I would have hoped for a more attractive GUI. Obviously, this does not affect the functioning of the robot. I would have liked more support from the vendor towards other external tools, like matlab or ROS.

Title
UR5e cobot for Automated Packaging We used the Universal Robots UR5e cobot for an automated packaging application. The goal was to improve product quality and productivity by automating the packaging process, and the UR5e proved to be the perfect solution.
Pro
The UR5e's intuitive programming made it easy to create the required pick-and-place algorithm for our packaging application. We used a vacuum gripper to pick up the products and place them into boxes on a conveyor belt. The robot provided high precision movements and strong safety features, ensuring safe operation even in close proximity to human operators.
Con
One limitation we encountered was the UR5e's body size, which restricted the size of the products we could handle. We also had to be careful in choosing the right gripper for the job, as some products required a more specialized gripper that was not compatible with the robot.

Pick and place tasks, dual-robot manipulation, human-robot interaction, motion planning for collaborative tasks
Pro
The robot is easy to use and offers the ability to implement motion planning algorithms and control through ROS. This manipulator is compatible with different grippers (in our case, theqbrobotics qb Soft Hand). Given the thoughtful design of the user interface, even those with no prior robot knowledge can operate the device. Nevertheless, the cost is affordable and the documentation is complete.
Con
To my knowledge, the only limitation is given by the reduced payload of the manipulator.

I was enrolled in the professional training of UR5 arranged by my University's Robotics Lab. Here, the robot has to pick a small block, with the lab's logo on it, from a platform. Then it will show this to the audience. In the end, it will place this on another platform. The main aim was to include all 6 Degrees of freedom in this complete motion.
Pro
First of all, the look of this co-bot is attractive. It feels good to use. Apart from that, the online training available for this co-bot is excellent. Firstly, I learned from there on how to use this robot and how to program it. Then I used this robot practically and I am extremely satisfied with the online training. Also, this co-bot is easy to use and the controller interface is user friendly.
Con
I think when working with the coordinates, it is a bit difficult to understand. There is no vision camera for the robot to automatically detect the shape of the object and automatically adjusts its rotation or the rotation of gripper.

Great collaborative robot for research. We used this cobot in our lab to test pick-and-place algorithms and for collaborative motion planning.
Pro
Cobot with a great payload and a user-friendly interface. It is fast and easy to create simple programs directly from the teach pendant to test simple algorithms. Universal Robots also provides a ROS wrapper, so it is also possible to program the robot using your own motion planner. The robot is also compatible with many common grippers and tools.
Con
It's a bit bulky and heavy, so you have to be careful on deciding where to mount the arm to avoid vibrations. It also offers only joint-level control.

My aim was learn and implement a project to sort the different products using this UR5 robotic arm autonomously while the products are placed on a conveyor belt.
Pro
This is a 6 Degree of freedom robot whose movements are quite precise and accurate. It provides a ability to carry the payload of 5 kg (11 lbs). External gripper can be attached to as an end effector to pick and place products. It can also be controlled using ROS and visualized through rviz and gazebo.
Con
It doesn't have much sensors. Little difficult to interface with external technologies like ROS. Since doesn't have vision sensors therefore can't avoid obstacle that exist in it's path during movement.

I have used the UR 5 in a wide variety of applications and in all of them it was truly in the master class. In both palletizing and depalletizing, there were never any problems with the dimensional accuracy of the movement. The robot was also used for inserting components into machines, as well as for assembling individual parts. Another application was for grinding off a burr on a component using the force function. There were program points needed for everything, and if they didn't exist, a URCaps from the community could help out.
Pro
The comprehensive variety of functions and application possibilities of the UR are unbeatable. There is also no better customer support than from this manufacturer. The community forum alone helps immediately with most problems, because either an employee or another user has already discovered and solved the problem. The number of enhancements by customers must also be highlighted separately! Almost every gripper or other peripheral can be used with this robot, or was specially designed for it. A true wonder model.
Con
Unfortunately, it often happens that the robot moves into its own links, so that intermediate positions have to be built into the program to avoid exactly that. A function where the robot checks the travel path in advance would be phenomenal! The teach panel could also be a bit more touch-sensitive. This has improved somewhat with the e-Series. In addition, a complete repair was already necessary on some joints of the CB-series after 1-2 years, as these suffered in continuous operation.

I used this manipulator for physical human-robot collaboration (pHRC), with a force/torque sensor mounted between the last joint and an interface with handles. It was mostly used for collaborative abrasive blasting. The same robot has also been used for research purposes to test several control algorithms in the domain of pHRC.
Pro
It is really easy to set up the robot to use with its interface. This robot is also widely used by several well-known research groups, so if you want to write your own software, there is plenty of open-source code (especially in ROS) to get you started. The documentation is well written and the fact that this robot is certified by the CE to use in proximity to people makes risk assessments easier.
Con
This is a robot designed to work safely in proximity to humans. This means that the external load that the manipulator can sustain is quite limited.

PLC and ROBOT Massage Bed (PLC sends to robot positions and he dinamically interpolates the path between them by means of following the info given by a distance sensor)
Pro
- Can be programmed by functional blocks - Easy learning curve - Extensive open source documentation and easily understandable - More advanced options can be done using the URScript language
Con
- The interpreter could be better in terms of running code directly into the robot (URscript). Sometimes was tricky to debug syntax failures - The need of a Virtual Machine to run the UR environment - Someway tricky to combine both functional blocks and URscript blocks - I Missed a brief changelog between different versions and the scope of each UR environment version (plenty of versions were available and you have to choose one of them depending on which robot you are going to use)

In fact, i first like the user interface of this robot. It's a very aimable user interface that is simple to use and to find every fucntionality of the robot. I also like the sensitivity of this robot and the variety of applications that can be used in. I really like the precision and the repeatability of this robot. Title
Industrial Screwing using Cobots & Vision
Pro
I have worked with the Universal Robots UR10 CB3 cobot for a car's chair assembly R&D project. The idea was to do a collaborative assembly using screwing tools and 2D Vision. UR is well known for being the most important brand in the cobots domaine. UR offers some advantages others brands do not have. I prefer to precise that the UR10 CB3 cobot is not the same as the UR10e (this one is much better) : - Programming this robot is very intuitive in the Teachpendant. Just take the available instructions in the TeachPendant (Instructions availables between basic, advanced, UR wizard or the installed URCaps). - For a more advanced programming task, you can do it by URScript ... it is quite similar to python. - It is a very opened brand, with a very big blog/forum for any kind of users (UR experts, students, beginners, researchers, etc) and a very consistent API for programming the robot or the plugins' developpement. Compatible with ROS for exemple. - You can do your own interfaces for your applications in this cobot (URCaps) with the "Look and Feel" of Polyscope (based on Linux) using the UR SDK. They are programmed in Java or in HTML (Basic URCaps) and a lot of support is available either from the blog or from URExperts. - Compatible with many devices. It is understandable, being the first cobot's brand in the industry world. - Basic communication bricks are already present (Profinet, Modbus, Ethernet). - You have the option to define zones avoid the robot to cross in them, or to be a collaborative zone. - Updates are free. - Suitable for both academic & industrial activities.
Con
- This robot does not have a cockpit to command it as in other brands (to take it by hand) - I believe that the mechanical construction is not the best (motors), you may see vibrations and sometimes shakings of the robot. - You will never have your robot in the same position after a restart or after an emergency stop, so brakes are not the best. - For more industrial heavy process, there maybe exist other cobot brands with a better "strenght" ... but maybe not that versatile as UR. - The external software "URSim" to simulate the routines of this cobot is not that powerful. You cannot include 3D files, or simulate communications, or doing heavy programming. It is just a duplicada of the Polyscope Interface in your computer (However it is useful to test your own URCaps) ... Maybe for other UR versions is different, or use another software. - The is not a tool to calculte in an automatic way the TCP, weight of the inertia ... User must do it by hand (because this version does not have a sensor at the End Effector).

Perfect for simpel tasks, challeging for more complicated tasks
Pro
I like the easy to program features, the PolyScope GUI. I also like the possibility to deviate from standard programming tools and functions and write your own script by hand. Combining these two is a bit difficult though. The possibility to easily install background software like VNC viewer (Remote Desktop like software) or Beacon (Remote monitoring tools) is also very usefull. The frequent software updates with new features!
Con
It's maximum load in combination with range. Though logical, the load is specified at 10kg but this is reduced to 4 or 6 when almost at maximum range. There is no notification or warning when this happens, it just error's and goes into fault mode. When using the Force mode, the robot loses a lot of accuracy. This could be that I'm using it wrong but in my application I'm trying to find the previous product in a stack while holding the current product. But it often failed to align properly with a pin. Modifications to the pin solved this issue.

A good starter
Pro
Easy of use, and a lot of support material (documentation, free simulator) from the manufacturer.
Con
In some parts of the word, these robots can be very expensive compared with regular industrial robots with the same payload/reach.

Quick to deployment, easily programmed
Pro
Easy to program, teach pendant was easy to use and even better following updates (UR5e interface started to look much better). Easy for operators and maintenance to interject when needed. Functionally, the setup and placement of the robot isn't difficult and can create high flexibility in processes.
Con
Motor faults weren't easy to diagnose/troubleshoot. The "free move" function never seemed super stable. File management is laborious

UR5e my feedback
Pro
* Easy to program. * Easy to teach the waypoints. * Anyone can do programming. * User-friendly in nature. *
Con
* Cost is too high when compared with its competitor products. * While updating firmware existing problems getting solved and new problems are coming. * IO screen gets white patch marks occassionally (needs to restart the cobot to access io) * Plane position was changed after updated firmware and resulting position shift . * Can't met desired cycle time.

User friendly. Easy to learn in a few days. Possibility to implement in multiple disciplines such IoT, Computer Vision, Automation, Robotics....
Pro
The user friendly program gives you the possibility to implement an application in a few days of studying. Ideal for research project and robotics projects. High precision movements and strong safety features. From personal experience, is possible to implement the UR5e on different fields: Computer Vision, IoT, Robotics, Automation and so on.
Con
It is an expensive system due to it is high precision and safe guards. It has some limitations due to it is body size. Also it has some limitation for the adaptability of some projects, but it can be programmed to overcome some of those issues.
