Billet Picker Overview

What is Billet Picker?

The Pickit Billet Picker offers a transformative solution for billet handling in forges, replacing outdated mechanical systems with cutting-edge automation. By utilizing the Billet Picker alongside a robot, noisy vibrating feeders are replaced with a streamlined billet flow that saves space and reduces noise. The Billet Picker boasts exceptional durability, resulting in low maintenance costs compared to traditional methods. Additionally, its integrated design eliminates the need for custom gripper solutions, leading to substantial cost savings in design and integration efforts. This tool stands out as the only proven option for successful bin picking in forge environments, making it a game-changer for industrial automation in this sector.

Key to the Billet Picker's efficiency is its End Of Arm Tool (EOAT), which seamlessly integrates with the Pickit 3D vision system and specialized software for precise robotic billet handling. The innovation lies in its unique gripper, featuring an adaptable tooltip equipped with a magnet on a rotational axis. This patent-pending gripper concept enables the Billet Picker to excel in versatility and performance. Notably, the Billet Picker's compatibility with specific software systems, coupled with its tolerance for extreme temperatures, adds to its specialized capabilities. This adaptability to harsh environments underscores its unique position in industrial automation, offering a reliable solution where conventional methods fall short.

Title
The Pickit L-HD system was tested with a UR5 robot with an ON-Robot end effector (Two-point Gripper). A consumer product pump was placed below the Pick IT system to allow for detection & teaching. Once a point cloud was produced, the system was taught a pick point for the product. Sample of pumps were used as the product to be picked and placed.
Pro
The camera was really easy to set up. The UI of the Pick IT system is really easy to navigate and use. The learning curve is quite low compared to other systems such as Cognex. The support from Pick IT was good, organised a demo and a training course. Image was quality and point cloud resolution was good for most tasks.
Con
System struggled with more complex parts, this could be due to the ambient lighting at the testing site. The system didn't allow the user to modify as much setting as Cognex which was used a baseline in these steps. Had some issues implementing with an Allen Bradley PLC at the time of testing - could be fixed by now.
