RobotStudio® Overview

What is RobotStudio®?

ABB's RobotStudio stands out as a powerful simulation and offline programming software, widely regarded as the most used tool of its kind in the world. Its offline programming capability enables programming, training, and optimization of robot systems without disrupting production, ensuring maximum return on investment and minimizing production downtime.

Built on the ABB Virtual Controller, RobotStudio offers realistic simulations using actual robot programs and configuration files from the shop floor. Its feature-rich package includes Virtual Meetings, enabling collaboration through sharing digital robot solutions in web meetings, reducing travel expenses and time. The Digital Twin concept allows real-time simulation of the production system without affecting ongoing production, facilitating changes and optimization in the virtual world.

RobotStudio's Virtual Commissioning replicates the production cell virtually, solving technical issues in advance and speeding up commissioning. The Stop Position Simulation visualizes optimal braking distance with millisecond precision, enhancing SafeMove usage, reducing cell footprint, and streamlining commissioning. Moreover, the Augmented Reality feature overlays modeled solutions as holograms in the real-life production environment, accessible through augmented reality glasses or smart devices. These unique specifications make ABB's RobotStudio an ideal option for industrial automation and offline programming.

What applications is RobotStudio® product best for?

ABB's RobotStudio is a powerful simulation and offline programming software tool that can be applied to a variety of industrial automation applications. Its offline programming capability, realistic simulations, and add-on features make it an essential tool for maximizing return on investment and optimizing robot systems without disrupting production.

One of the main applications of RobotStudio is in the automotive industry, where it is used to program and optimize robot systems for assembly, painting, and welding applications. The software's virtual commissioning feature enables the testing of the complete logic and safety of the cell virtually before installation, saving time and reducing the risk of issues arising during production.

RobotStudio is also used in the food and beverage industry, where it can be used for tasks such as palletizing, packaging, and machine tending. Its virtual twin feature enables the real-time simulation of the production system, allowing users to try changes and perform optimization in the virtual world without affecting production.

In the pharmaceutical industry, RobotStudio can be used for tasks such as pick and place, packaging, and quality control. Its stop position simulation feature visualizes the optimal breaking distance of the robot, reducing the footprint of cells and enabling faster and more effective virtual and physical commissioning.

RobotStudio is also widely used in the electronics industry, where it is applied to tasks such as soldering, pick and place, and assembly. The software's augmented reality feature allows for the visualization of robot solutions by overlaying the modeled solution over the real-life production environment as a hologram.

Title
The robot arm has a vacuum gripper with label sticked. The label must be pasted on the steel coil for packaging. The robot must be programmed to pick label from source stationa and paste it on the steel coil in the production line. The program must take inputs from other sesnors inorder to find a new steel coil appeared in the production line. Once the steel coil is detected, only then the label printed out of source station is picked by the robot and started to paste it on the coil.
Pro
The robot studio offers a very good view of offline programming the robot and dumping the developed high level language script to robot. It can be used to connect with third party software and send commands to robot and perform. There are scenrios where robot must be integrated with the plc or other controller. The robot studio acts as a host for configuration, commissioning and other applications.
Con
The software is very expensive and requires activation every year. It is very hard for start up companies to afford building a complete tool. The software must poses an option to do high level script importing from various languages luke C# and others. So that the sofware developers can get started very quickly to perform basic functional testing and communication testing very easily.
